Advantages of Wood...
Well, where does one start? The very fact that we regularly work on 200 year old floors speaks volumes about the product itself. Historically, it has an excellent track record. If laid correctly it will last indefinitely. It provides good thermal insulation, particularly if compared to metal or concrete. It can be renovated if worn or even after suffering years of neglect and usually remains both fresh and attractive long after other surfaces and that includes laminates, have become completely unserviceable.
It was unlikely until well into the 1600’s and indeed considerably later than that in some areas before houses started to have wood floors. Prior to that beaten earth or clay floors were the norm.
By the Georgian period wood floors were much more common, most constructed from tend to be referred to as ‘inferior woods’ such as pine or fir often imported from Scandinavia. These early floor although often of a uniform depth usually were made up of a variety of widths of boards. In fact that continued until well into the 19th century until patented machines were designed to produce uniform boards.
It was normal for floors to be covered in some way. Some were painted to resemble marble blocks. Terracotta paint was also used and at one point it became quite fashionable for them to be stencilled. Un-finished floors were often regularly limewashed which gave them a whitish appearance others were shellacked and then waxed and polished. And let’s not forget that for those who could afford them, carpets became popular as far back as Georgian times.
What possible can be better than natural wood. There are few homes or buildings that don’t benefit from the truly amazing natural colours and superb contrasting grain that only real wood offers.
